Francisce G. Pinzón Samper
b. 1997, Bogotá — lives and works in Paris

Pinzón Samper’s practice moves between painting, drawing, sculpture and mixed media. After relocating to France at eighteen, Pinzón Samper studied Theory of art at the Sorbonne University before attending the École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts de Paris, where they worked in the studio of Mimosa Echard.

Drawing on personal memory, an archive of images referencing spirituality and « superficial » aesthetics, Pinzón Samper constructs eclectic and contrasted, psychologically charged images. Their compositions often evoke theatrical stages or cinematic tableaux, bringing together fragments of lived experience with images drawn from art history, popular culture, fashion and contemporary visual media. The artist describes this process as that of an ‘image DJ’: collecting, sampling and recombining visual references to create new, deeply personal configurations.

Their visual language is characterised by saturated colour, stylised forms and a fluid interplay between intimacy and artifice. Influences ranging from the Renaissance paintings of Fra Angelico to Emilio Pucci’s designs, 1960s colour palettes and manga contribute to a practice in which disparate cultural references coexist within dreamlike, allegorical scenes.

Pinzón Samper has exhibited in Paris, New York, Glasgow, Bogotá, CDMX, Basel and London. In 2021, they were awarded the Hélène Diamant Prize for Contemporary Drawing.
